The first historical information on Narni, at "Nequinum", date back to 600 BC, but the area was inhabited since the Neolithic. In 299 BC was named Roman colony of Narnia, and in 233 BC became important fortification for the construction of the Via Flaminia.
In 90 BC became Munucipio. He was exposed to barbarian invasions because of its dominant position, and became a free commune in sec. XI: between the ages XII and XIV reached its peak. During the Renaissance was frequented by top-caliber artists such as Rossellino, Ghirlandaio, Vecchietta, Antoniazzo Romano and Spain. In 1527 he was taken with the betrayal by Lansquenets that incendiarono. Artists such as Zuccari, Vignola, Sangallo and Scalza part in the reconstruction, and was founded in 1664 the municipal library. Among the famous people born in Narni remember the Roman emperor Nerva Cocceio, Gattamelata, Blessed Lucia, Berardo Eroli, Galeotto Marzio and Cassio from Narni.
There are numerous monuments of honour in the city. Among the major include the Romanesque cathedral, which are works of Rossellino and other famous artists, the church of St. Francis, built in the thirteenth century. With great frescoes by local school, Palazzo dei Priori, probably built in 1275 by Gattapone from Gubbio and place in the homonymous medieval square. In this square is also the Town Hall, built in 1273 with the union of three towers, where you can admire: the Coronation of the Virgin, built in 1486 by Ghirlandaio, the St. Francis Stigmatizzato of Spain, of the Annunciation Benozzo Gozzoli and an Egyptian Mummy of the fourth century BC At the bottom of the square is a fountain of 1303. Other monuments certainly worthy of note present in the city centre are: Palazzo Scotti, frescoed Zuccari in 1581, the Gardens of San Bernardo, from which one can admire the beautiful valley of the river Nera, and from which you access to the Underground San Domenico, the ancient Church of San Domenico, now the headquarters of the library and archives of state and the Church of Santa Restituta with the adjoining convent, St. Augustine, the fourteenth century, rich in works of art, and Church of St. Margherita, with an interesting cycle of frescoes attributed to the Aeneid. Just outside the city are the mighty Rocca Albornoz built around 1370 by Ugolino of Montematre Committee for de card. Egidio Albornoz and recently restored, and the Bridge of Augustus, built in 27 BC to a length of 160 metres, the arch remainder of which is 30 meters high. Slightly more distant from Narni deserve without a doubt the avisita Speco S. Francis (18 km), with interesting frescoes of the century. XIV and XV, the Abbey of San Cassiano, just opposite the city, the Abbey of St. Angelo in Massa, and the Roman church of Santa Pudenziana (6 km).
