Umbertide first arose in the nineteenth century, or according to other scholars, in Mille, under the name Fracta not too distant town of Roman Pitulum Mergens, which are considered vestiges exist around St. Mary of Seven. The name of the city remain Fratta until 1863 when it is renamed in honour of Prince Umberto.
The April 25, 1944 during an allied bombing of the railway station, a stray bomb fell on the oldest part of town, the medieval quarter S. John, obliterandola with loss of 70 lives. In 2002, an initiative of the School of Media Umbertide gave birth to "Voices of memory", poetic commemoration of each of people killed on that day.
Located in the upper valley of the Tiber, crossed the same river Tiber and the Palace, shows a typical old town. Famous are now become the Taverne century, appointment unique because the villages of the town light up for four days of nineteenth atmosphere, with people dressed in costumes of the age and alleys where relive the battles of the Risorgimento.
Centre important metalworking, textiles, packaging and industrial ceramics, but also of tabacchicultura: special attention is given to organic farming to which they have dedicated extensive debates in September.
